â€Å"Mathematics† is a polarizing word for many people and very often it evokes numerous personal reactions, commonly an anxiety reaction. Surprisingly, I am not speaking here only about students, but more importantly about the people who teach mathematics. As the study done by Alan B. Bates, Nancy I. Latham, and Jin-ah Kim indicated, many teachers have fears about teaching mathematics and how teachers’ fears influence students, their learning outcomes, and how mathematics has impacted them in their years of teaching. These finding are also relevant to how I felt about teaching math due to lack confidence in my teaching abilities of mathematical content knowledge. However, as I am reflecting on this past semester that I spent learning about math trajectories as well as math content knowledge, I feel much more confident in exposing my students to math. I think that mathematics is not an easy concept to teach and it requires good strategies to be a successful teacher, b ut if we do not try to teach it, we will never gain confidence in it. Child Abuse: Saddest and Most Tragic Problem Today Essay Child Abuse: Saddest and Most Tragic Problem Today Essay Child abuse is one of the saddest and most tragic problems in America today. Each year an estimated one to two million American children are being beaten, neglected, or sexually abused by their parents or guardians. Infants only a few days old as well as teenagers are subject to child abuse. There are four types of child abuse: physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Child abuse is a serious problem that plagues Americas youth and should be stopped. Physical abuse is a form of child abuse that should be stopped as soon as possible. According to social agencies, beatings of children have multiplied over the past twenty years. Physical abuse is any abuse that is harmful to the child. This kind of abuse includes the physical discipline which results in observable injuries on the child. It also includes use of a life-threatening weapon, like a gun or a knife, against a child and any abuse resulting in death. Any abuse which results in a sever injury requiring prompt medical attention, that could be life threatening, that could cause mental and/or physical impairment, could cause disfigurement, or chronic pain is too classified as physical child abuse. Another form of physical abuse is any knowing or willful mistreatment which in the opinion of a licensed medical doctor causes great bodily harm and/or results in hospitalization for treatment of this injury or condition; this may include physical injury sustained as a result of abuse or conditions which result from a parents willful failure to act to stop this from happening to the child. Physical neglect is defined as failure to provide for a childs physical survival needs to the extent that there is harm or risk of harm to the childs health and safety. Physical neglect includes these four things: inadequate food, inadequate shelter, inadequate medical care, and inadequate supervision. Forty-two percent of all child abuse reports involve allegations of physical neglect. The inadequate food element includes a child intentionally or deliberately not getting fed or given water. It also includes a diagnosis by a physician of failure to thrive because of a parents failure to feed the child. Inadequate shelter includes prolonged and serious illness resulting from exposure to the elements or to serious dangerous substances as evidenced by serious injury. Inadequate medical care encompasses the child not receiving medical treatment for an injury, illness, or disability, and if left untreated, the condition is life-threatening, or will result in permanent impairment, or is a serious threat to public health. Inadequate supervision is dependent upon the childs age, developmental level, willingness to stay alone, time of day, awareness of what to do in case of an emergency, whether the child is responsible for watching younger brothers and/or sisters, whether the child had any physical or mental limitations that would make it difficult or impossible for the child to care for himself/herself, and/or any other applicable circumstances. Some signs of neglect are obvious in children and others are not. A sign of neglect is that the child/children have repeated injuries that are not properly treated or adequately explained. Another sign of neglect is that the child/children begin acting in unusual ways ranging from disruptive and aggressive to passive and withdrawn. Their sleep is disturbed (nightmares, bedwetting, fear of sleeping alone). They lose all of their appetite or they overeat. There is a sudden drop in school grades or participation in school or after school activities. They may act in stylized ways, such as sexual behavior that is not normal for their age group. Joshua and the Shepherd Copyright 1990 by Joseph Girzone Published by Simon & Schuster Inc. The book Joshua and The Shepherd is a novel, in which the author creates a model for the Catholic Church. The author, Joseph Girzone, presents the reader with many changes that could be made to the Catholic Church. He writes on the possible impact of these changes and the attempts that certain Church members take to block them. In reading this book you will quickly ascertain that the author is very vivid in painting a picture in you minds eye of the incidence he is describing. In the first paragraph, of the book, he goes into a description of the beautiful day that the story starts on. Throughout the book this style is continued. You can almost feel a small presence of God in the weather and scenery that he brings to life in his writing. The book opens with the Consecration of the new bishop, David Campbell, for the diocese that most of the events in the book take place. This bishop is the main character in the book. The plot centers on the changes that he tries to make within the Catholic Church. After David is consecrated he has a revelation. In this revelation the Holy Spirit moves David to do everything in his power to shift the focus of the church to one of unity and forgiveness, as opposed to a church that is bound by strict laws. The second character that is brought in after David's revelation is named Joshua. The author never specifically says who Joshua is, but you get the impression that he is either a prophet or possibly Jesus himself. Through out the book David puts himself on the line for his beliefs. Transcending many of the self imposed barriers on religion, that humans have erected over the years, was a key point that David focused on. With constant support and fellowship from his friend Joshua, and the Pope, he eventually succeeds with his efforts and establishes unity of almost all Christians within his diocese. In the later part of the story after Joshua has succeeded he is sent away to a quite, poor, and remote diocese to"punish" him for everything he did to change the Catholic Church. He never loses faith though and in the end he is voted to be the new Pope when his friend the old Pope dies. I feel that this book is excellent reading material for the class. It goes hand in hand with the textbook we are using. Allan Schreck and Joseph Girzone are obviously of common thought when it comes to promoting unity among Christians. When you read the novel you get a feel for a lot of terms used in the catholic church. Under most circumstances these terms are foreign to typical Protestant Christians. They make sense and have more meaning to me now that I have read the novel. There are many things that I personally like about the book Joseph and the Shepherd. It portrays the catholic church in a light that I have never really seen before. You are given an example of an almost perfect utopia for the unification of all Christians. However, I do feel that the author used an un- realistic time frame for the changes manifested in the church. In reality I think it would take much longer for David Campbell to see the fruit of all his labor. But, I really do like the ideas that are presented. The specific scenarios that David finds himself in are very moving. These scenarios are brought to life so well that you can almost experience some of the feelings that were inspiring David to do the work he felt called to do. The selfless way that he reaches out to Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, and Jews really makes a lot of sense to me. I like the way the way that David looks beyond "religion" and concentrates on the true basics of Christianity. He denounces the legalistic hypocrisy of some church leaders and reaches out to all people with a love that reflects that of Christ's. This is definitely a book that I would recommend to a wide variety of people. I would definitely recommend it to any Protestant who wants to see what kind of direction the Catholic Church could take to include them. Analysis of the story â€Å"The Escape† by Somerset Maugham. The short story â€Å"The Escape† written by Somerset Maugham is exactly about this case, about the conflict between man and woman, and this escape is the main theme of the text. At last Ruth lost her patience and left Roger herself. The title of the text is one word that consist the definite article ‘the’ and the noun ‘escape’. The definite article ‘ the’ is here not accidentally – it claims that text is about exactly this escape and not any in the world. The story begins with the narrator’s introduction of the problem that if a woman wants to marry a man, it’s a man’s hazard and he has to find the way out of the situation.This is the exposition of the story. The exposition is written in the ironic tone. Such epithets as instant flight, inevitable loom, the narrator’s note â€Å"with a tooth brush for all his luggage, so conscious was he of his danger and the necessity for immediate action† make this effect. Then comes the inciting moment, in which both Roger Charing and Ruth Barlow are introduced. It is said that Ruth was twice a widow and it is said ironic, because the reader can think that Roger is the next victim, through the simile â€Å"He went down like a row of ninepins†.He also gives a direct description of Ruth’s eyes using the epithets â€Å"splendid†, â€Å"moving†, â€Å"big and lovely†, a detached epithet â€Å"poor dear† – all in the ironic way. The modal verb must, exclamatory sentence, parallel constructions â€Å"if she married a husband beat her, if she employed a broker he cheated her, if she engaged a cook she drank†, the allusion â€Å"She never had a little lamb but it was sure to die† make a humorous effect. We can recognize now completely that all the narrator’s words were ironic, because his epithets towards Ruth are like that, and also â€Å"stupid† and a simile â€Å"as hard as nails†.Then there comes an explanation of why he has such an attitude towards the poor widow. Going further, we come across an anticlimax. The tense is growing, but then Roger â€Å"on a sudden, fell out of love†. This is a bit unexpected. Ruth’s â€Å"pathetic (a repeated epithet) look ceased to wring Roger’s heart-strings† (a metaphor). But Roge r â€Å"swore a solemn oath† (a metaphor) not to jilt Ruth, moreover, she was able to â€Å"assess her wounded feelings at an immoderately high figure† (an extended metaphor). And here begins the real climax with its growing tense.The author uses repetitions â€Å"they†¦ they†, â€Å"sometimes†¦ sometimes†, â€Å"they looked, they inspected, they climbed†. After the main heroes’ reasoning in direct speech, their proceeded searching for a house looks like a repetition, too. Yet, the author uses an antonomasia here, calling Roger an angel, though we know he is not – an irony. Their further reasoning in the direct speech appears to be the climax: â€Å"do you want to marry me or do you not? † Roger kept standing on his position – epithets â€Å"assiduous and gallant†. Turn off the microwave.Let the mixture cool slightly, then repeat step 3 (microwave until about to overflow). The more times this step is repeated the more rubbery the substance will become. The purpose of the cooling step is to check the consistency of the slime and prevent it from overflowing the container.After 5-6 microwave runs, (carefully - hot hot HOT) pour the flubber onto a plate or cookie sheet.
